Islamabad sits at 540 meters, with the Margalla Hills rising behind the modern capital. The rest of the day is free to rest after your flight. In the evening, your guide meets you for a briefing about the journey ahead—what to expect, how to prepare for the altitudes, and answers to your questions. We recommend an early night. Early morning departure for the drive north on the Karakoram Highway. Follow the Indus River through the beautiful Kaghan Valley or via Besham depending on road conditions. Stop for lunch at a riverside restaurant. Continue through dramatic gorges where the highway clings to cliffs hundreds of meters above the river. Pass through the towns of Besham, Dasu, and Pattan, watching the landscape transform from green hills to arid mountains. Arrive in Chilas by evening, a town on the banks of the Indus at 1,265 meters.
