A rewarding 6,000-meter peak in the heart of the Karakoram Range

The window to climb in the Karakoram is brief, and the mountains do not wait. Alpine Karakoram Adventure invites climbers to join our Khosar Gang expeditions for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, with fixed departures scheduled from June through August—the optimal weather window when the Karakoram offers its most stable conditions . Our 17-day expedition covers every detail from your arrival in Islamabad to your safe return, including all permits, logistics, Base Camp infrastructure, and professional support. Known locally as the "Ice Pumpkin" in the Balti language, Khosar Gang rises in the scenic Shigar Valley and offers the perfect introduction to high-altitude mountaineering in the Karakoram . With a relatively short approach and moderate technical demands, this peak serves as ideal preparation for 7,000-meter and 8,000-meter objectives. Slots are limited each season to maintain small team sizes and maximize safety. Contact us to secure your place on this rewarding Karakoram peak.

Overview

Khosar Gang rises to approximately 6,400 meters in the Shigar Valley of Baltistan, Pakistan, though recent GPS measurements suggest the true elevation is closer to 6,046 meters . Located on the left bank of the Braldu River in Sildi or Kashmal Village, this majestic mountain offers an ideal introduction to ice climbing, high-altitude mountaineering, and the spectacular Karakoram Range . The peak attracts climbing enthusiasts because it presents a genuine challenge for those building their skills while offering breathtaking landscapes in one of Earth's most rugged and awe-inspiring regions. The mountain's history stretches back more than a century. The first recorded ascent was made in 1899 by the American couple Dr. William Hunter Workman and Fanny Bullock Workman—at that time, a world altitude record for women mountaineers . Fanny's achievement remains significant in mountaineering history, demonstrating that women climbers were pushing boundaries in the Karakoram long before the region's more famous peaks were climbed. Set against the backdrop of the mighty Karakoram, Khosar Gang provides unparalleled opportunities for trekking and climbing. What makes this mountain particularly attractive is the relatively quick and easy access to Base Camp—just 45 kilometers from Skardu City and a 4-5 hour trek from Sildi Village . This allows for a comprehensive expedition in just 17 days, immersing you in the wild beauty of the Karakoram without requiring the extended time commitment of more remote objectives. In February 2022, a four-member Russian team including legendary climber Denis Urubko made the first winter ascent of Khosar Gang via a new route on the left flank . Urubko explained their choice: "The standard way to the Khosar Gang peak is too icy and avalanche-risky in the winter period" . Their achievement added another chapter to the mountain's climbing history and demonstrated that even this "beginner" peak offers serious challenges in winter conditions. The trek to Base Camp starts from the village of Sildi and leads to 3,800 meters. From there, the mountain unfolds through camps at 4,800 meters and 5,200 meters, testing and building your technical abilities along the way. Expedition leader David Hamilton, who has guided multiple successful trips to Khosar Gang, noted after his 2022 expedition: "This expedition had been planned to take place in August 2019, but was postponed for two years due to Covid related travel restrictions. There are very few 6000m peaks in the Himalayan or Karakoram regions that can be climbed safely and reliably in a 2-week trip from Europe" . Whether as a standalone adventure or preparation for 8,000-meter giants, Khosar Gang remains one of the most rewarding 6,000-meter peaks in Pakistan. Its combination of accessibility, manageable technical challenge, and spectacular setting makes it a favorite among climbers building their experience in the great ranges.

Note: This plan is designed for optimal acclimatization and safety based on extensive experience organizing expeditions in the Karakoram . However, mountain travel requires flexibility. Weather, road conditions, and flight availability in the Karakoram can change rapidly. Skardu flights cancel frequently due to weather, making road travel via the Karakoram Highway a necessary contingency . The climbing period is entirely weather and condition dependent—expedition leader David Hamilton noted that after two years of pandemic delays, his 2022 team finally achieved 100% success with all eight climbers reaching the summit . Your guide will make adjustments as necessary to prioritize the safety of the group. We plan thoroughly but adapt constantly. The mountain sets the schedule.
