It is a 14-day immersion into one of the most scenic and culturally rich trekking adventures in Pakistan, offering a perfect combination of dramatic landscapes, peaceful trails, and breathtaking views of the majestic Masherbrum . The trek begins in Islamabad with a flight to Skardu, then a scenic jeep drive through the Shyok and Hushe valleys to Hushe village—the last permanent settlement before the high peaks . From Hushe, the trail follows the Hushe River through green valleys, traditional Balti villages, and moraine landscapes to Parbisan, Brum Bramma, and finally Masherbrum Base Camp at 4,200 meters. The route is relatively short and easy compared to longer Karakoram glacier treks, with only brief sections of glacier walking before base camp . A trekker described the moment of arrival: "The magnificent Masherbrum peak stood all in its glory as we had a glimpse of it. The uniquely shaped summit with snow covers hiding behind the clouds was totally enticing. We relaxed and sunbathed in the meadow with splendid views of Masherbrum in the surroundings" . Day by Day Itinerary
Participants arrive at Islamabad International Airport. The Alpine Karakoram Adventure representative meets each arrival at the arrivals gate with clear company signage and assists with immigration and customs formalities. Luggage is collected and an immediate private transfer is arranged to centrally located accommodation. The day includes views of wide tree-lined avenues, green parks and government buildings. Participants are strongly advised to rest, drink plenty of fluids and avoid unnecessary exertion after long-haul international flights. In the late afternoon, an evening team briefing follows, covering the entire 14-day trek schedule, detailed safety protocols, equipment requirements, daily medical monitoring procedures, emergency evacuation plan, group expectations and any last-minute questions.
After breakfast we proceed to the Ministry of Tourism for the official briefing. The afternoon is free for a city tour of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Visit Faisal Mosque, the largest in Pakistan, set against the Margalla Hills; Lok Virsa, the museum of folk heritage; Saidpur Village, a restored 500-year-old village now home to craft shops and cafes; Daman-e-Koh for panoramic views over the capital; and Raja Bazaar in Rawalpindi for a taste of local life. This cultural introduction sets the stage for the mountain journey ahead.
Early morning transfer to Islamabad Airport for the scheduled domestic flight to Skardu. When the flight operates, the 45-minute journey offers spectacular aerial views of Nanga Parbat and the Karakoram giants. Upon landing in Skardu, immediate transfer to accommodation. If the flight is cancelled due to weather, we depart by road via the Karakoram Highway with an overnight stop at Chilas. Skardu, at 2,230 meters, is the capital of Baltistan and the gateway to the great peaks.
Full day in Skardu for sightseeing and final preparations. Visit Kharpocho Fort, built in the early 1700s, which offers sweeping views over the Indus River and Skardu town. Explore Sadpara Lake with its crystal-clear blue waters, Kachura Lake, and the bustling local bazaar for last-minute purchases of snacks, batteries or small items. If the flight was cancelled the previous day, today is used for overland travel from Chilas to Skardu. All trekking permits and documentation are finalized with local authorities.
Jeep drive to Hushe, approximately 6 hours. The route passes Khaplu Fort (700 years old), Gwari Organic Farm, Saling Fish Farm, and follows the Shyok and Hushe rivers through Machulo village and other traditional settlements . The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as you approach Hushe, the last village and the gateway to the Charakusa and Gondogoro valleys. Upon arrival, check into guest house or campsite. "Absolutely breathtaking! This was my reflexive reaction to seeing the picturesque village of Hushe" .
Scenic and easy hike from Hushe to Parbisan camp. The trail is flat with only 450 meters gain over 2–3 hours. We cross a footbridge over the Hushe River and walk to the west bank towards the fields . Excellent views of surrounding peaks and valleys unfold with every step. Parbisan is about 10 kilometers from Hushe, and it took one trekker around 15,933 steps to reach it by 1 PM . Full-service camp established with stunning views.
Trek to Brum Bramma camp with 500 meters gain over 3–4 hours. The trail offers continuous dramatic views of Masherbrum and surrounding peaks. This section is more challenging—"it was manageable at first, but then came the great mountain that we had to climb. It was all barren with stones, which was pretty exhausting" . After difficult climbing, we take a break for tea and lunch in the middle of nowhere—an experience one trekker described as "extraordinary and something I can never forget" . The campsite at Brum Bramma (meaning "between mountain and willow bush") is at 4,050 meters, a sandy area between willow bushes .
Short trek to Masherbrum Base Camp with 200 meters gain over 3–4 hours. Following the trail up the valley heading north while contouring along the lateral moraine of Masherbrum Glacier, after walking on the glacier for 45 minutes, we finally reach the base camp . The moment of arrival is unforgettable: "The magnificent Masherbrum peak stood all in its glory as we had a glimpse of it. The uniquely shaped summit with snow covers hiding behind the clouds was totally enticing" . Full-service camp established with impressive close-up views of Masherbrum's ice faces.
Full day at base camp for exploration, photography and acclimatisation. Walk around the camp area for closer views of Masherbrum and surrounding peaks. "We relaxed and sunbathed in the meadow with splendid views of Masherbrum in the surroundings" . The serene environment and towering peaks create an unforgettable high-mountain atmosphere. Rest and enjoy the beauty of one of the Karakoram's most iconic mountains.
Return trek to Parbisan via Brum Bramma. The descent takes approximately 4–5 hours. The return journey offers new perspectives on the landscape we climbed through. One trekker recalled an adventure on their return: "We found out that the bridge we used to cross the river was broken due to the water flow. This made us hike back, and we had to cross a glacier—the same glacier we found so pretty while heading to the campsite, never thinking we would have to cross it to get to the other side" . This is the reality of mountain travel—flexibility and trust in your guides are essential.
Final trekking day back to Hushe, approximately 3–4 hours. The trail retraces our steps through the beautiful valley. Arrival in Hushe in the afternoon, with time to rest and reflect on the journey completed. Overnight in guest house or campsite.
Morning jeep drive back to Skardu via the Shyok and Hushe valleys. The return route offers different angles of the landscapes we passed on the way in. Arrival in Skardu and check into hotel. A hot shower and comfortable bed feel like luxury after days in the mountains.
Early morning drive to Chilas along the Karakoram Highway. The road follows the Indus River through dramatic gorges and mountain landscapes. En route we stop at the junction point where three great mountain ranges meet—Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindukush. Arrival in Chilas and check into hotel.
Full-day drive to Islamabad along the Karakoram Highway. En route we stop for ancient rock drawings at Shatial, evidence of the centuries-old trade routes that passed through this region. Arrival in Islamabad in the late afternoon. Transfer to Islamabad International Airport for your international departure flight. The Masherbrum Base Camp Trek concludes.
Note: The Karakoram requires flexibility. Flights are weather-dependent, and road contingencies are always in place. Trek timing may adjust based on group pace and conditions. Hikers are at the mercy of mother nature whenever they embark on a trek . In our case, our original goal was to reach K7 but the route was blocked by a landslide before we arrived. So our guides suggested an alternate route . Patience is not just a virtue here, it is mandatory. We plan for reality so that you can focus on the mountains.
