Tirich Mir stands proudly at 7,708 meters, the undisputed monarch of the Hindu Kush range and the tallest mountain in Pakistan outside the Karakoram . Located in the remote Chitral Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, near the border with Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor, this peak is both a legend and a challenge . The Tirich Mir Base Camp Trek takes you into the very heart of the high Hindu Kush, following the Lower Tirich Glacier through remote valleys, traditional villages, and dramatic moraine landscapes. Day by Day Itinerary
Participants arrive at Islamabad International Airport. The Alpine Karakoram Adventure representative meets each arrival at the arrivals gate with clear company signage and assists with immigration and customs formalities. Luggage is collected and an immediate private transfer is arranged to centrally located accommodation. The day includes views of wide tree-lined avenues, green parks and government buildings. Participants are strongly advised to rest, drink plenty of fluids and avoid unnecessary exertion after long-haul international flights. An evening team briefing follows, covering the entire 14-day trek schedule, detailed safety protocols, equipment requirements, daily medical monitoring procedures, emergency evacuation plan, group expectations and any last-minute questions.
After breakfast, transfer to Islamabad Airport for the scheduled domestic flight to Chitral (weather permitting). The 1-hour flight offers aerial views of the western Himalaya and Hindu Kush. Upon landing in Chitral, immediate transfer to accommodation. The afternoon is free to explore Chitral town, bazaar, and Shahi Mosque. Flights are weather-dependent; if cancelled, road contingency via Lowari Tunnel is activated with an overnight stop en route.
Full day in Chitral for final equipment checks, permit finalization, and sightseeing. Visit Chitral Bazaar, Shahi Mosque, Chitral Fort, and local villages. The guide team conducts thorough gear checks and porter organization. This cultural immersion sets the stage for the mountain journey ahead. Afternoon free to relax or explore. Early departure by jeep to the Zani Pass trailhead. Descend from Zani Pass through arid terrain and traditional villages to Shagram (also spelled Shagrom). The trail offers dramatic views of the Hindu Kush peaks receding behind you as you enter the fertile Tirich Valley. Shagram is home to the high-altitude porters who support expeditions up Tirich Mir, Istor-o-Nal, and Noshaq . Arrival at Shagram camp in the afternoon. Full-service camp with time to relax and explore the village.
Trek through willow groves, birch forests, and dry terrain following the Tirich River upstream . The path offers increasingly impressive views of the surrounding peaks. Summer pastures dot the landscape, with local shepherds tending their flocks. Camp in a scenic location with full service. The reappearance of trees and vegetation after the barren pass crossing is a welcome comfort.
Trek beside the Lower Tirich Glacier and across moraine to Shoghor Baisun camp . The trail becomes more rugged, with spectacular views of the glacier and surrounding peaks emerging with every step. The terrain is reminiscent of the Karakoram but on a smaller, more intimate scale. Camp is established on a grassy and sandy highland plain at 4,038 meters, an excellent place to pitch camp with dry-masonry walls and little squares built by the porters of expeditions up Tirich Mir .
Trek along the glacier to Babu Camp—Tirich Mir Base Camp . The camp is named after Babu Mohammad, a veteran guide often found at Chitral's Mountain Inn who accompanied numerous expeditions to the peak . Arrival offers impressive, close-up views of Tirich Mir (7,708m), Istor-o-Nal, and Noshaq. Full-service camp established. A trekker who reached this point described it: "Reaching the base camp of Tirich Mir was more than a trek. It was a symbol of resistance, courage, and unity. Full day at Babu Camp for exploration, photography, and acclimatisation. Walk around the camp area for closer views of the upper Tirich Glacier and surrounding 7,000-meter peaks. The base camp offers a surreal 360-degree view of snow-covered peaks . This is an opportunity to absorb the high-mountain atmosphere and reflect on the journey. Optional short walks to viewpoints. Return trek along the glacier to Shoghor Baisun camp. The day allows time to consolidate acclimatisation and enjoy the scenery in reverse, with new perspectives on the peaks and glacier.
Continue descending to Sheniak camp, passing through the jungle of birch and willow that characterizes this section of the valley . The reappearance of trees and vegetation signals the return to lower altitudes.
Trek back to Shagram (2–3 hours), then drive to Chitral . The reappearance of cultivated fields, apricot trees, and houses is always cause for a sense of comfort after long days spent crossing the glacier . Arrival in Chitral in the afternoon. Check into hotel for hot shower and comfortable beds. Celebration dinner with the team.
Morning flight to Islamabad (weather permitting) or drive via Lowari Tunnel. The flight offers aerial views of the Hindu Kush and western Himalaya. Upon arrival in Islamabad, transfer to hotel. Afternoon free for relaxation or optional sightseeing—Faisal Mosque, Lok Virsa Museum, or Saidpur Village. Farewell dinner in the evening celebrating the successful completion of the trek.
After breakfast, transfer to Islamabad International Airport for international departure flights. The Tirich Mir Base Camp Trek concludes. The Alpine Karakoram Adventure representative assists with check-in formalities and sees the group off.
Note: The Hindu Kush requires flexibility. Flights are weather-dependent, and road contingencies are always in place . The flight between Islamabad and Chitral is subject to weather conditions, and cancellations are common . Trek timing may adjust based on group pace and conditions. The trekking period is entirely dependent on weather windows; patience is mandatory. There are two possible routes to the base camp—the Terich Valley route described here is for experienced trekkers, while the Owir Valley route is shorter and suitable for beginners . We plan for reality so that you can focus on the mountain.
