Journey through the heart of the Karakoram on the world's seventh-longest glacier.
The Batura Glacier stretches 57 kilometers through the heart of the Karakoram, one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions—the seventh longest in the world . What makes Batura special among great glaciers is its proximity to a highway. Perhaps nowhere else in the world can one see a glacier of this size located so close to a major road . Alpine Karakoram Adventure invites experienced trekkers to join our Batura Glacier expeditions for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, with fixed departures scheduled from June through September—the optimal weather window when meadows burst with wildflowers and the glacier is most accessible . Our 16-day journey covers every detail from your arrival in Islamabad to your safe return, including all permits, logistics, camping equipment, and professional support from Wakhi guides who have walked these trails for generations. Slots are strictly limited each season to preserve the wilderness experience and ensure small group sizes. Contact us to secure your place on one of the Karakoram's best-kept secrets.

The Batura Glacier Trek is one of the most spectacular and least-visited high-altitude glacier journeys in the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. With a length of 57 kilometers, it stands as the seventh-longest glacier in the world outside polar regions, flowing gracefully from west to east just north of the towering Batura and Passu massifs, which rise majestically at heights of 7,795 meters and 7,500 meters respectively . The trek starts from Passu on the Karakoram Highway and follows the glacier through lush alpine meadows, birch and juniper forests, traditional Wakhi summer pastures, and remote shepherd settlements to the heart of the glacier at Yashpirt and Gutshism, reaching approximately 3,800 meters . The route offers close-up views of massive icefalls, hanging glaciers, and the towering peaks of the Batura Muztagh, including Shispare (7,611m), Ultar Sar (7,388m), Passu Sar (7,478m), and the mighty Batura massive rising to 7,785 meters . There's a reason I keep going back to the north of Pakistan. The first time I set foot near Batura Glacier, I was overwhelmed—not just by the sheer size of the icy river but by the peaceful silence that enveloped the entire valley. I remember sitting on a boulder near Yashpirt, sipping salty chai offered by a local shepherd. That moment—void of cell service, traffic, or noise—made me realize what it means to be truly present . This trek is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a true wilderness experience with big-mountain scenery, glacier walking, and authentic Wakhi hospitality. Unlike the more commercial Baltoro or Fairy Meadows routes, the Batura Glacier remains remote and sees very few visitors each season—offering solitude, dramatic landscapes, and a real sense of adventure . Alpine Karakoram Adventure operates the trek with experienced Wakhi porters, government-licensed mountain guides, and a dedicated kitchen crew—all from the region or with many seasons on Batura routes. Logistics include full-service mobile camps (two-person sleeping tents, dining tent, kitchen tent, and toilet tent at every site), satellite phone communication, daily medical monitoring with pulse oximetry, emergency oxygen, and comprehensive first-aid kits. Safety is the absolute priority: daily distances and elevation gains are kept conservative, mandatory acclimatisation days are built in, and real-time weather and glacier decisions override any fixed schedule. The trek is fully self-sufficient from Passu onward—all food, fuel, and group equipment for 8–9 days of continuous trekking is carried by the porter team. This model ensures complete independence and control over pacing, group safety, and contingencies in a remote valley with no permanent infrastructure beyond Passu. The whole area is a wilderness and no one lives there permanently, though temporary stone huts of very basic level have been constructed by locals who come up the glacier for grazing their cattle and hunting . Alpine Karakoram Adventure has continuously refined this itinerary over many seasons while maintaining full compliance with Central Karakoram National Park regulations and restricted-area protocols. The trek's rewards are immeasurable—you don't just trek here, you reconnect with nature, people, and yourself .

Note: The Karakoram requires flexibility. Flights are weather-dependent, and road contingencies are always in place. Trek timing may adjust based on group pace and conditions. The trekking period is entirely dependent on weather windows; patience is mandatory. The whole area is a wilderness and no one lives there permanently—temporary stone huts of very basic level exist, but trekkers must be fully self-sufficient . We plan for reality so that you can focus on the mountain.
