Skiing here takes two forms. Resort skiing operates at established areas like Malam Jabba and Naltar, where chairlifts and beginner slopes provide access for families and first-timers. These resorts sit at moderate elevations, with groomed runs, equipment rental, and ski schools that have been operating for decades. Naltar, in particular, has produced Pakistan's national ski team for generations, with local skiers who learned on these slopes going on to compete internationally. Then there is backcountry skiing—the real draw for serious skiers. Pakistan's high mountains offer some of the longest ski descents on earth. Peaks above 6,000 meters hold snow year-round, with faces dropping thousands of vertical meters. Heli-skiing operations in the Karakoram put skiers on glaciers and ridges that would otherwise require weeks of approach. The skiing is technical, the terrain committing, and the rewards unmatched anywhere else. A British skier who spent three weeks in the Karakoram wrote afterward: "I have skied in Chamonix, in Alaska, in the Andes. Nothing compares to this. The scale is different. You look up and see mountains that go on forever. You look down and see valleys that have never seen a ski track." Another, a Pakistani skier from Naltar who now guides international visitors, put it simply: "These mountains are my home. When I see guests cry at the beauty, I understand. I cry too sometimes."
