Helicopter Rescue & Travel Insurance Guide
In the Karakoram and Himalayas, the difference between a minor injury and a life-threatening situation often comes down to logistics. Pakistan's rescue infrastructure is unique compared to other mountaineering destinations. It is controlled exclusively by the military, and understanding how it works is mandatory for every climber and trekker.
There are no private commercial rescue helicopters in Pakistan. All Search and Rescue (SAR) operations are managed by Askari Aviation, a subsidiary of the Pakistan Army.
When a rescue call is made, it is not a private pilot who responds; it is the Pakistan Army Aviation corps. Because these are military assets, every mission requires high-level clearance before launch.
Army helicopters fly strictly on visual flight rules (VFR). They cannot fly in heavy clouds, high winds, or after sunset. If the weather closes in, a helicopter rescue becomes impossible, regardless of the medical urgency.
The helicopters will not launch until a payment guarantee is confirmed. This is why having verified insurance is critical. If insurance cannot validate coverage immediately, the rescue is delayed until a cash deposit ($15,000–$20,000 USD) is made.
Rescues are generally viable up to 6,000m to 6,500m. Helicopters struggle to hover or land in the thin air above this zone. Climbers in distress above 7,000m (on K2 or Nanga Parbat) usually must be lowered by their team to a reachable "pick-up zone" on the glacier.
You cannot obtain a climbing permit for Pakistan without proof of specialized insurance. Standard 'credit card' travel insurance is almost never sufficient for the Karakoram.
When purchasing a policy, you must ensure it explicitly includes the following clauses:
Many policies cover "medical evacuation" (hospital to home) but exclude "Search and Rescue" (mountain to hospital). You need a policy that covers the cost of the helicopter to get you off the mountain.
Your insurance must be rated for your specific altitude.
The best providers (like Global Rescue, Garmin, or World Nomads' Explorer Plan) have relationships with Askari Aviation and can provide the necessary financial guarantees quickly to speed up the rescue.
As your ground handler, Alpine Karakoram Adventure acts as the bridge between the mountain and the military.
